Historic England lists the brutalist building
“It’s a building that brings people together.”
Brixton Recreation Centre has been listed as a grade II building by Historic England. A move which will hopefully squash plans by Lambeth Council who have proposed demolishing the building in the past.
The Rec was given the listing for its architectural characteristics, citing the building’s “thoughtfully composed and proportioned” structure which helps “optimise natural light” also pointing out its distinctive sculptural concrete forms.
Historic interest and cultural significance are also noted, the South London centre part of the local community and a place where the late Nelson Mandela visited in 1996.
