We look back ahead of the last year of Space Ibiza under Pepe
Set in the heart of Playa d’en Bossa, Space is an Ibiza institution. Opening in the 1980s, Space Ibiza quickly became one of the island’s party staples along with Amnesia and Ku (now Privilege). A unique clubbing destination, it has revolutionised the party scene in more ways than one and has set the bar high for what a nightclub can be.
Space joins the 27 club this year as the lease on the site runs out, whatever returns in 2017 will not be the same venue. On the eve of the superclub’s last season, we look back and celebrate the legacy Space has cemented.
Daytime party original
Out of the many things that can, and will be said about Space, the reoccurring stories in years to come will be of the Sunday sessions begun at the turn of the millennium. It defined daytime clubbing, inspiring copycat parties around the globe. Sunday afternoon onwards through till Monday morning, Space was the place to be. Clubbers got lost inside the world of Space’s We Love… party. The terrace was open air for the sun to warm your smiling cheeks and dancing limbs. Those who experienced it should call themselves lucky. It’s doubtful the authorities will let that one fly ever again.
Versatility is Space’s speciality
Something Space has which no other nightclub on the island can boast is the five floors you can get in on the action. Each room varies in moods all night. For many, it’s all about the terrace, although the Sunset Terrace, Premier Etage and El Salon each have their moments. Everybody remembers the first time they graced the main room Discoteca, with its superb visuals and bad boy sound system. For the opening and closing Space fits a massive stage in the car park and from well before sunset you can get the full effect of the club’s functionality.
A masterclass in how to impress
The renowned club is the worlds most awarded, and that should tell you something. Space has it all, light shows, killer sound, a pizza bar, well air-conditioned rooms, with barely there roofs in three of the rooms. Space’s sound system is custom designed by the founder of Funktion One. Fit to expel the best possible auditory experience in every corner of each room. More importantly, the weekly programming is solid, with many DJs finding a home at Space, from Carl Cox to Richie Hawtin. Space looks and feels different for every night, with the promoters able to make it their home.
